The Way of Peace

The way of peace they do not know; there is no justice in their paths.  They have turned them into crooked roads; no one who walks in them will know peace.

If we are to discover ‘the way of peace’, then we have to ask “What is the way of peace?”  Going back to Jesus who said, “I am the way…” we can find out by looking at Jesus’ ways, which He showed us.  The most obvious way that Jesus went was to Jerusalem, and then to the cross.  They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, and the disciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid.  Again He took the twelve aside and told them what was going to happen to Him.  “We are going up to Jerusalem,” he said, “and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and teachers of the law.  They will condemn Him to death and will hand Him over to the Gentiles, who will mock Him and spit on Him, flog Him and kill Him.  Three days later He will rise.”

We all are called to follow Jesus, so are we not to follow in the way of peace with the Father?  The way of peace for all mankind took Jesus to the cross for our punishment.  Therefore, He became the Peace Offering from the Father for us all.  The path of peace starts at “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.  For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.  Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the Name of God’s One and Only Son.”  If you can believe, you have started walking on the path of peace.  Yet, people have only stuck their foot on the beginning of the path and have stayed there most of their lives, or have not moved along the path very much.

So, if there is a beginning to the path of peace, what is the ending to the path of peace?  The fruit of righteousness will be peace; the effect of righteousness will be quietness and confidence forever.  My people will live in peaceful dwelling places, in secure homes, in undisturbed places of rest.  Is this not what all people in the world are looking for from peace?  When people ask for peace, could a better description be found – quietness and confidence forever – forever being confident of the future, while living in quite surroundings?  So the path of peace can be described as becoming more and more righteous with God, at all times.

Righteousness and peace are very closely associated, yet peace comes out of righteousness.  So, what is right in God’s eyes?  …To avoid sin or to master sin?  …To collect money for the poor or to multiply food for the poor?  …To practise the ways of the world or to practise the ways of Jesus?  …To sell what you have freely received or to freely give it out?  …To listen to men or to listen to Jesus?  …To just believe Jesus or to repent and believe Jesus?  …To ignore the Holy Spirit or to receive the Holy Spirit?  These are the questions we should ask ourselves, and all who would want to be in right standing with God and the world should know what the true path of peace is.  So if Jesus is our righteousness, then we are to do as He has said, and we are to know, love, understand and practice what He has said.  As Jesus is our peace with God, we don’t have to fear the constant distress of God, due to our sin against Him.  Our peace with God lies at the end of the path of peace with God that we are to travel on.  So, by God’s grace given through Jesus Christ, we are given time to walk along the path of righteousness in peace with our heavenly Father.  This is why it is written:  Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.  Going back to look at Isaiah 59:8 – The way of peace they do not know; there is no justice in their paths.  They have turned them into crooked roads; no one who walks in them will know peace.

But those who turn to crooked ways the LORD will banish with the evildoers.  Peace be upon Israel.  Wisdom says, “All the words of My mouth are just; none of them is crooked or perverse.”  “I walk in the way of righteousness, along the paths of justice.”  It is on your travels on the path of righteousness that your walk can become crooked.  It is while travelling on the path of righteousness, that you yourself or others could misguide you and make your path personal crooked.  The path becomes crooked when the righteousness with God becomes misdirected or blurred.  The main cause of this comes from not knowing the command of the Father to those who follow Jesus Christ and not knowing to practise what Jesus did or to listen to the Holy Spirit.  These are the main things that will keep you off the path of righteousness.  Next are all the details that are revealed in the listening and practising of the word.  Not following the revelations from the many details will make your walk on the path crooked.  Crooked paths include the paths of the 7 enemies of Jesus:  the Devil, Pharisees, Sadducees, Herodians, Balaamites, Jezebelians and Nicolaitions.  If you end up following these paths, then you are sure to not be on the path of righteousness.  So, watch your step closely.

It is important to note that it is a path, and like most paths in the jungle or the bush, or even in the wilderness, there is only enough room for one person to travel on them.  Therefore, our path of righteousness is to bring us into peace with God.  It is a single lane with only you on it following Jesus.  There should be no one else on this path and if you are following anyone else but Jesus, you are not on the path of righteousness and you won’t get to the point of peace with God.  This includes following the Apostle Paul, Peter or any other prophet or apostle of God, as all these people have been on their own path, following Jesus themselves.  This is your path of righteousness to bring you to peace with God Almighty.  We can look at other people’s paths and their own testimony of what they found on the path, but it is not your path.

Paul said, “No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful.  Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.  Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees.  “Make level paths for your feet,” so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.”  From heaven He made you hear His voice to discipline you.  I will discipline you but only with Justice…

As it is easy to go off the path of righteousness, the LORD will correct your listening to Him, so that you can learn to walk on the right path which God has selected for you.  It is while walking along the path of righteousness, coming into greater peace with God, that God will discipline you to ensure that you remain on the path.  Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying “This is the way; walk in it.”  It is His voice as a constant reminder along the path that will keep you on the righteous path, especially the voice of Jesus from the highlighting of Jesus’ words.

The harvest of righteousness is the ability to do what Jesus did and in the way that He did it.  The peace gives the quite confidence that you know what you are doing is for God and it is in His plans.  The fact is that what God has revealed to us about what is to come for the last days is not a picture of peace and quiet. This is where our true peace and quiet confidence comes into play with the LORD, for this is what will allow you to endure through the troubles ahead for the world.  If you have your peace with God, you will not be troubled as the world will be.  The peace Jesus left us with was that with God, all would work out no matter how bad it may seem, and knowing that the path ahead is to be walked by us.

Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees.  “Make level paths for your feet,” so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.  In front of us seem only great valleys and mountains, but we are to “Make level paths…”  This means we are to tear down the mountains and fill in the valleys.  So, we are like a construction team going from one side of the land to the other, building a highway to the LORD, but it starts first with a path!  On our path we work to flatten the mountains and raise the valleys that are in front of us.  This is our work, so as Paul said, “strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees,” for there is much work to be done to make the path level so that one day there will be a highway.  And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness.

Strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way; say to those with fearful hearts, “Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, He will come with vengeance; with divine retribution He will come to save you.”  Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped.  Then will the lame leap like a deer and the mute tongue shout for joy.  Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert.  The burning sand will become a pool, the thirsty ground bubbling springs.  In the haunts where jackals once lay, grass and reeds and papyrus will grow.  And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness.  The unclean will not journey on it; it will be for those who walk in that Way; wicked fools will not go about on it.  No lion will be there, nor will any ferocious beast get up on it; they will not be found there.  But only the redeemed will walk there, and the ransomed of the LORD will return.  They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads.  Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away.

Peace be with you.
