The Gifts of God

Download the pdf file

Since the Holy Spirit by His Testimony has restored to us the knowledge of the time sequence of the events and teachings of Jesus, it is also timely to review the sequence in which the Lord God has poured out His gifts upon us.

As it has been taught before, there are 12 gifts and not nine as is more commonly taught by Paul in his letter to the Corinthians.  For the Lord has never operated using nine of anything.  There are 12 sons of Israel, 12 tribes, 12 miracles for Israel’s deliverance, 12 apostles, 12 foundations to New Jerusalem, 12 gates into the city, and so on.  The nine listed in Corinthians should be preceded by three others – grace, righteousness and glory.  These first three came by Jesus, but nevertheless, they are also gifts of the Holy Spirit, for He is the Spirit of Grace and of Glory, and He convicts us of righteousness.

Paul has the nine gifts listed in this order:  To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. [1 Corinthians 12.8-10]

The gifts of the Lord are weapons, and they have been given to us to overcome the world and all its faith, so that the Kingdom of God can finish the preparations for the return of Jesus.  They are not for the establishment of the church.  The reason for the existence of the church is to manifest the Kingdom of God for Jesus to return to reign.  Jesus did not die to establish the church, but rather, He established the church so that it prepares the Earth for the next phase of His life – to reign as King on the Earth.  Jesus is not praying to serve the church, but rather, He is praying that the church serves Him.

As with all weapons, there is an order of battle for them.  There is an order in which they are brought out so that the purpose for which they are given is best served.  For instance, in the wars of this world, artillery is used first to soften enemy defences, before tanks and infantry are sent in.  No one in their right mind would send in infantry, then tanks, then follow up with an artillery barrage.  You end up blowing up your own men and tanks.

So, what is the order in which the Lord gave and intended to give His gifts?

The first gift of the Lord is grace, for Jesus came full of grace and truth, [John 1.14] and by grace through faith we are saved.  The first gift of grace saved us.

Then the second gift from the Lord is righteousness, which we receive through faith in Him so that we, like Abraham, can be His friends as well.

The third is His glory, which He gave us in John 17.22 so that we are changed to be capable of oneness as They are One.  The oneness needed to show the world the truth about Jesus and the love that is in the Father, that He would love us as He loves Jesus.

The fourth, as has been mentioned that Jesus intended for the disciples, is power… miraculous powers for the establishment of the Kingdom of God.

The fifth is the gift of tongues, so that the culture of the kingdom can be established, for the identity of a kingdom lays in its language.

The sixth is the interpretation of tongues, which allows a kingdom to interact with other kingdoms through communication and translation of their respective languages.

The seventh is the message of knowledge, for nations interact with the exchange of knowledge.

The eighth is the message of wisdom to know how to interact with other nations.

The ninth is the gift of prophecy, for the kingdom that knows what lays in the future has the advantage over those who do not.

The tenth is the gift of discernment of spirits to see what others cannot see of the spirit world.

The eleventh is the gift of faith, not the believing kind, but the obeying kind, so that loyalty can be formed in the kingdom.

The twelfth is healing for the nations that are overcome by the Kingdom of God, so that they may yet prosper, but under the rule of the Kingdom of God.

The gifts then are for building the kingdom.  Kingdoms are made up of individuals, and so likewise, the gifts are for the building up of the individual person.

The grace to save you and I.

The righteousness allows you and I to fellowship with Him.

The glory changes you so that you can become one with others as They are One.

The power gives you life to supply and to protect you.

The language for you to speak and communicate in secret, first with God and then with your own kind.

The interpretation to understand what has been said to you.

The knowledge to do with what has been told to you.

The wisdom to apply the knowledge effectively.

The prophetic to know what is to come so that you are prepared.

The discernment to know the holy from the unholy, your enemies from your friends.

The faith to obey and to be loyal.

And finally, the healing from all that can befall you as you grow in Christ.

These then are the gifts that God has given to individuals and to His kingdom.  Gifts, which when manifested in each and every one of us, will allow us to overcome the world and establish His kingdom on Earth.

When the order in which they are given is understood and appreciated, the manifold wisdom of God, His divine logic, can be seen.
