He will be a spirit of justice to the one who sits in judgement… [Isaiah 28.6]

Justice cannot be served by facts alone, but by the truth.  And until the Holy Spirit is received by the disciples of Jesus as the Spirit of truth, then no spirit of justice will arise in them and they will not be able to perform what Jesus said they can.

For when Jesus said, “Receive the Holy Spirit,” [John 20.22] He also said, “If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” [John 20.23]  What Jesus said there seem to go against an earlier command of His, “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.” [Matthew 7.1]  For to decide which person and his sins we forgive and which person and his sins we do not forgive requires judgement.  So, in receiving the Holy Spirit, Jesus told us that the first thing we can do is judge to decide whom and what we forgive and not forgive.

This then is the key point about the Holy Spirit being sent as the Spirit of truth.  For it is because He comes as the Spirit of truth that justice can be brought out, and in those who have received Him as the Spirit of truth, He will be a spirit of justice.  Note that He will be a spirit of justice, not the Spirit of justice.

What is the significance of this?  Much, for as Jesus came to serve, so the Holy Spirit came to serve.  As Jesus washed the feet of His disciples to show them that He was serving them, so the Holy Spirit will serve those who have received Him as the Spirit of truth, that is, the Spirit who works only for the glory and honour of the One who sent Him.

He will be a ‘spirit of justice’ in those who sit in judgement… those who have received Him and now have to decide to judge between those who have sins that can be forgiven and those who have sins that should not be forgiven.  In those who have received Him as the Spirit of truth, He will serve them as a spirit of justice.  Serve, not lord over them, that is, He will be their Counsellor in matters of justice… their Adviser, without commanding them.

In those He can be a spirit of justice, He will also be a source of strength… a source of reserve strength, like ones who are turning back the battle at the gates of the city.  He will be the source of their strength when things become desperate.  However, that strength does not come unless He is already a spirit of justice first, and He will not serve anyone as a spirit of justice unless He is first received as the Spirit of truth.

So then, to anyone who holds onto the recommendations of James the Younger and has made the Holy Spirit as One who does not work for the honour and glory of the One who sent Him, He will never be a spirit of justice nor a source of strength to turn back the battle.  It will take thorough repentance from the teachings of men like James for the Holy Spirit to be the Spirit of truth for those who love the things of James and his associates.

However, for those who have received Him as the Spirit of truth, to them He will serve as a spirit of justice so that it is possible to sit in judgement and decide who and what sins are forgiven and not forgiven as Jesus said, without contravening the earlier command, “Do not judge…”

Justice for Jesus then comes when the One He has sent is received as the Spirit of truth and is allowed to testify, first by power, then by word.  And because He can bring justice to Jesus, He will become a spirit of justice in all who likewise seek justice for Jesus.  And as we seek justice for Jesus, then we have shown ourselves as ones who can judge rightly and can be given more to judge.

The appearance of one who has a spirit of justice is also the appearance of one who has the strength to turn the tide of battle.
