“Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the Earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn ‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law—a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’ ”

Jesus cannot be clearer about His intentions regarding the so-called family structure of men that we so seem to over value. Indeed, never did He say the opposite to these words that a man should stay with his father, a daughter with her mother, and so on. Indeed, in Mark 10.29 when He said, “I tell you the truth, no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for Me and the Gospel…” it means that He actually expects His disciples to have done these things, and if they have done so, then and only then will they “ …receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields…)

Learn once and for all… with Jesus it is not about keeping the peace at any cost, it is about making the peace, regardless of the cost. Peace not as the world gives – which is fleeting and temporary, based on promises given by one liar to another liar, for all men are liars and God alone is true – but an everlasting peace that Jesus only can give… His peace. Peace that is first with God and which endures in our families after we have left them for the Gospel and for Jesus, and received them back in the one hundred fold. That hundred fold is what it takes to ensure that this peace endures.

Since Jesus did not come to bring peace on the Earth, but to turn “…a man against his father…” and so on, and He has said, “Anyone who has faith in Me will do the things that I have been doing…” then should it surprise you that this too is one of the things we are to do… to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law, a man’s enemies will be members of his own household.

Now, how can we do this and escape the consequences of the command… “Do to others what you would have them do to you…”? For if we turn a man against his father, then we must also be prepared for our sons to turn against us, or we have to turn against our father, and so on. A disciple who has paid the full price of discipleship and has left home, brothers, sisters, mother, father, fields or children for the sake of Jesus and His Gospel has protected himself from the fallout of doing what Jesus came to do in Matthew 10.34-36. Having already left your father, you cannot turn against him as such… and so that frees all true disciples to do this thing that Jesus came to do and suffer no ill consequences at all. That is why obedience to His words is so important, for obedience, full obedience, to practise all He has said, offers the protection from the consequences of the double-edged sharpness of His words. Indeed, at all times we must do unto others as we want done for us.

If we want to see Jesus, we are free to do to others whatever it takes for them to see Jesus, as Jesus has said, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand.”

So, as a prelude to war and a farewell to peace… we are to start turning sons against fathers, beginning with Satan, that his sons turn against him. And in saying, ‘Satan,’ this includes the devil and everyone who does not have in mind the things of God but of men.

So it is not about ‘peace’ in ‘Christian’ households, for we know already many are like Peter who did not have in mind the things of God but of men. Indeed, no Christian who has his mind set on going to Heaven for eternal peace has the things of God on his mind, for what is on God’s mind now – the foremost – is the return of Jesus so that He can have His day of vengeance. Thus, the tactic of our warfare begins, as the Lord has defined it, in the household of everyone who is satan, which is anyone who does not have in mind the things of God.

How is this achieved? By our faith and our willingness to practise the words of Jesus of course… and so firstly, it is by prayer. Do not expect Jesus to pray for this, for as it is written, it is His saints He now makes intercession for… not His enemies or those who are to Him a satan. So this task falls on us, yes us, not so much as prayer but as a declaration of His will and the manifestation of His word that from now on… every man will be against his father, every daughter will be against her mother, and so on… and we do this knowing that the household of true disciples are kept safe from this word of the Lord, for they have already left their households for His Gospel and for Him. Be assured, disciples, when you have received the children, brothers, sisters, mothers and fathers who are of the promised hundred fold, they can never be your enemies… so, your household can never be divided. From households, we move to cities and from cities to kingdoms, which are different from nations, for kingdoms stand for organisations as well as countries.

As He said again in Luke, “I have come to bring fire on the Earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is completed! Do you think I came to bring peace on Earth? No, I tell you, but division. From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

As such, lament no further about the decay of the family unit, for if you were to examine those units, they are from those who do not have in mind the things of God but of others… whether they are of men or not is irrelevant. You will find that under these words of Jesus… your religiosity and religion will not spare you even if you are a Christian, for Peter was a disciple, but that did not spare him being called satan when he did not have in mind the things of God.

So, as we start on the edge this precipice, and indeed it is a precipice… before we take our step of faith and step off to be immersed into our days of distress… understand clearly… only what God has in mind matters from here on, for He is the King.

In Deuteronomy 20.1-20, Moses gave Israel a set of rules for war, which carried some principles that were fitting for his time, but are obsolete for us. In his rules, Moses said that:

  • They were not to be afraid, because the Lord your God, who brought you up out of Egypt, will be with you.
  • And they should not be faint hearted, “For the Lord your God is the One who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.”

For you, elect… the Lord your God would have been taken out of the way as Paul wrote: He is taken out of the way… even though He is with us, yet He will not be fighting for us against our enemies. No, you will be fighting for Him against His enemies, and what is required in your heart is not just being ones who are fainthearted but ones whose hearts are filled with love for Him.

Those who are distractible by the cares of the world, the pleasures of this world and the deceitfulness of wealth must not come along, but only those who are fruitful with the word… for they are the Kingdom of God version of Deuteronomy 20.5-9.

Our peace offering to one and all is the signs that accompany us to confirm our gospel with the healing of the sick and driving out of demons. It is when they reject that these signs are a confirmation of the words of Jesus and His Person… it is this rejection that permits us to lay siege until all that stands against us is destroyed.

The Holy Spirit remains with us for a while longer… so that we may use the remaining time to prepare for this farewell to peace as man gives peace, and we master the making of peace as God makes peace

So, gird yourselves and rejoice when you see in the households of all who have not in mind the things of God… “ ‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law, a man’s enemies are from his own household,’ ” for as the Lord came to turn them against each other, so all who have faith in the Lord who seek to do what He has been doing and even greater things than these… will likewise work to turn sons against fathers, daughters against mothers, in-laws against in-laws, friends against friends, nations against nations, kingdoms against kingdom, for this is the time of the toes of clay and iron of the statue in Nebuchadnezzar’s dream when the rock will come out of the Heavens to smash it to pieces. And in the time of those kings, the God of Heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever.

Indeed, we will do the greater things, for the Lord came only to turn son against father, daughter against mother and in-law against in-laws… but we will turn those toes of clay against the toes of iron and be the rock that smashes them. For as Daniel wrote: This is the meaning of the vision of the rock cut out of a mountain, but not by human hands—a rock that broke the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold to pieces. But the rock that struck the statue became a huge mountain and filled the whole Earth.

We will turn nations against nations and kingdoms against kingdoms with the sword that is the word of the Lord, for neither have we come to bring peace on the Earth, but we have come to bring the Prince of Peace back to the Earth that He may be crowned King over all the Earth.

So, prepare yourself well… for as the Lord has said, “A curse on him who is lax in doing the Lord’s work! A curse on him who keeps his sword from bloodshed!”

Awake then as one from a peaceful slumber to the nightmare of all who are enemies of God… the return of Jesus Christ. Amen.
