“To the angel of the church in Thyatira write: These are the words of the Son of God, whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze. I know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are doing more now that you did at first. Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. By her teaching she misleads My servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food scarified to idols. I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling. So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am He who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds. Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets (I will not impose any other burden on you): Only hold on to what you have until I come. To him who overcomes and does My will to the end, I will give authority over the nations – ‘He will rule them with an iron scepter; he will dash them to pieces like pottery’ – just as I have received authority from My Father. I will also give him the morning star. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”[1]

In the church, there are many different interpretations of the perceived meaning of ‘Jezebel’. Generally, those in the church accept and believe that Jezebel is a spirit of immorality or sexual immorality, who goes around whoring or causing Christians to commit sexual sin or luring them into sexual sin, enticing Christians into lurid acts, fornication, or many variants of this behaviour. People, especially women, have been accused of this throughout church history, of being Jezebel or children of Jezebel, and they have then been condemned and burned at the stake.

This is an easy thing to accept for those who have not gone and read God’s word to find out for themselves the real adultery that Jezebel causes, just as it is with many other things in the Bible besides Jezebel, where presumption has allowed the church to be deceived away from the truth. Jesus spoke about ‘sexual immorality’ and those who ‘commit adultery with her’, and we need to see what has been written about her in the past, to get the right understanding in the light of what Jesus said concerning her.

To see this more clearly, we will look at King Ahab, whose wife was Jezebel: In the thirty-eighth year of Asa king of Judah, Ahab son of Omri became king of Israel, and he reigned in Samaria over Israel twenty-two years. Ahab son of Omri did more evil in the eyes of the LORD than any of those before him. He not only considered it trivial to commit the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, but he married Jezebel daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and began to serve Baal and worship him. He set up an altar for Baal in the temple of Baal that he built in Samaria. Ahab also made an Asherah pole and did more to provoke the Lord, the God of Israel, to anger than did all the kings of Israel before him.[2]

Jeroboam was the king to whom God had given ten tribes of Israel to rule over after Solomon had sinned against God. God did not take the kingdom out of Solomon’s hands, but did that almost immediately in the days of Rehoboam, Solomon’s son, when he became king. Jeroboam was fearful that the Israelites would go back to the king of Judah, and therefore made two golden calves for the ten tribes of Israel to worship. And King Ahab considered what Jeroboam had done to be trivial. It is pointed out that Ahab did more to provoke the Lord, the God of Israel, to anger than did all the kings of Israel before him.

So the king, who was leader over God’s people in Israel, was determined to do evil. Why? We find out why near the end of Ahab’s life, when Elijah pronounced God’s judgement over Ahab: Ahab said to Elijah, “So you have found me, my enemy!” “I have found you,” he answered, “because you have sold yourself to do evil in the eyes of the Lord. ‘I am going to bring disaster on you. I will consume your descendants and cut off from Ahab every last male in Israel – slave or free. I will make your house like that of Jeroboam son of Nebat and that of Baasha son of Ahijah, because you have provoked Me to anger and have caused Israel to sin.’ And also concerning Jezebel the Lord says: ‘Dogs will devour Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel.’ Dogs will eat those belonging to Ahab who die in the city, and the birds of the air will feed on those who die in the country.” (There was never a man like Ahab, who sold himself to do evil in the eyes of the Lord, urged on by Jezebel his wife. He behaved in the vilest manner by going after idols, like the Amorites the Lord drove out before Israel.)[3]

The key to understanding Jezebel is in the brackets: (There was never a man like Ahab, who sold himself to do evil in the eyes of the LORD, urged on by Jezebel his wife. He behaved in the vilest manner by going after idols, like the Amorites the Lord drove out before Israel.)

So Ahab sold himself to do evil, and he was urged on by his wife Jezebel. It was Jezebel who urged him to sell himself to do the evil in the eyes of God for the Israelite people. She was the one who wanted to keep her husband in power, for she herself was the daughter of the Sidonian king, and did not grow up in the ways of the God of Israel.

We need to understand that Jesus’ warnings of Jezebel were about the teachings of Jezebel, which lead Jesus’ servants into sexual immorality. So the danger of Jezebel is not in sexual acts and the like thereof, which she is wrongly presumed to have lead people into, but in the urging of her husband to sell himself to the Israelite people to gain acceptance and popularity, to retain power and money, and status. Basically, Ahab was making peace with the world, and not with God. He, as king, their leader, was supposed to set the example of peace with God for the people, and bring the Israelites into peace with God. But instead, he put all his effort into keeping the Israelite people happy in all their wants and needs, and helped them to please themselves in the way they wanted to live, and not in the ways of the law of God given through Moses.

Jezebel’s teachings are about how to make peace with the world, but Jesus will not tolerate peace with the world, for He said, “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the Earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn ‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law – a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’ Anyone who loves his father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me; and anyone who does not take his cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.”[4]

So, anyone who says, “I follow Christ,” but makes peace or tries to make peace with the world, will find that they are fighting against Christ, and that Christ will be against them! That is why there is no peace for the wicked who have forsaken God. Jezebel’s teachings teach people in the church to have peace with the world. And she urges them on, encouraging them to make peace with the world.

The warning of Jesus came to those in the church, and we need to look at how the church sells itself to gain acceptance by the world, through having peace with the world. As churches have peace with the world, they have adopted the world’s point of view. Churches that adopt the world’s point of view usually focus on having large congregations (which is popularity), large buildings and large bank accounts by which it can look like they are siding with the world in an acceptable way to appease the world, and in their own minds, God. In all the things that look good to the world, they sell themselves by working hard and imitating the world by helping the world, with the idea that the world may accept Jesus if they do things the world’s way. They commit adultery with the world by being intimate with the ways of the world, while trying to be intimate with Jesus at the same time. This is the adultery and sexual immorality that Jesus has warned us of! We want Jesus to solve our problems, and then we want to take the blessings given to us by Jesus to solve the world’s problems so that the world will accept us. We want Jesus to love us, and we want the world to love us. We want to love them both! ADULTERY! There can be no more of this!

Other churches have forgotten God in the work they do, and have totally immersed themselves into the ways of the world. They provide assistance for refugees, the poor, social programs, employment programs, earthquakes, bushfires and flood assistance to the world, but they do not utter a word about Jesus who saved them from their sin. Not a word. Yet they have peace with the world, and not with Jesus. They have forgotten Jesus altogether, or are ashamed of Him, or are deceived that they are doing the same works that Jesus does, and that He wants us to do this kind of work.

Jesus said, “The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have Me.”[5] How did Jesus want us to help the poor? With money? With welfare programs? No, but with the power of the Holy Spirit, in the same way He did it.

Jesus said, “So I will cast her onto a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. I will strike her children dead.”

Those in the church who accept the ways of Jezebel and want to have peace with the world, will find themselves on a bed of suffering. It will be Jesus who casts them on it. For the world cannot relieve the poor in this world and of the suffering it causes to many. Only Jesus has the answers to relieve the suffering of this world. Peace with the world causes the suffering to last longer, and the answers to the world’s problems will not come through the world, but only through the Creator who knows how to relieve the suffering.

Christians who wish for peace with the world for the sake of their own prosperity will find themselves the cause of greater suffering in the world, and Jesus will cause them to suffer in return. Jesus will strike the children of adultery dead. These are those who are in the church following the teachings of Jezebel, who seek to have peace with the world, to do good deeds to the world in the ways that the world perceives as good.

So, it is time to repent of the teachings of Jezebel in the church. That peace with the world in the church is destroyed and all treaties with the world are broken, and only holiness to Jesus, the Father, and the Holy Spirit is taught. Peace be with you.
