As the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus in bodily form like a dove as Jesus was praying when He was being baptised at the Jordan, the scripture of Isaiah 11.2 was being fulfilled… The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him— the Spirit of Wisdom and of Understanding, the Spirit of Counsel and of Power, the Spirit of Knowledge and of the Fear of the Lord… so that Jesus began and worked through His ministry with all the wisdom, understanding, counsel, power, knowledge and the fear of the Lord through the Holy Spirit.

However, when Jesus was at the end of His ministry before the crucifixion, He said to His disciples… the eleven actually… “If you love Me, you will obey what I command.  And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever— the Spirit of Truth.

Now… see that the first time Jesus spoke to His disciples regarding the Holy Spirit, He spoke of Him as the Spirit of Truth… and not of Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Power, Knowledge and the Fear of the Lord.  For the Holy Spirit had been known in the past to Israel as the Spirit as described in Isaiah 11.2… but Israel had never known Him to be the Spirit of Truth.  To His disciples, as another sign that they were to be the start of something new from God, He introduced the Holy Spirit by a new title… the Spirit of Truth.  That was to be the way and is the way for the disciples of Jesus to first receive the Holy Spirit… and as the Spirit of Truth who guides us into all truth… truth first before knowledge, wisdom, understanding, power, counsel and fear of the Lord.

This new revelation of the Holy Spirit – the Spirit of Truth – was to seal the reality that disciples of Jesus Christ who have listened to Him and eaten the bread and drunk the cup that is His body and blood are cut off from Israel by the Mosaic Law and the Levitical Law.  Since the eleven, by John 14.15, had partaken of His body and blood, they were ready to receive the new and the different, for in truth, they were no longer eligible to access God by the Law.  The Holy Spirit, who as the Spirit of Knowledge, Wisdom, Understanding, Power, Counsel and the Fear of the Lord as He had been for Israel through the Law, the Prophets and the Psalms, must now reveal a different way to help these disciples of Christ, for they cannot be helped under the old system.  As the Spirit of Truth, He can now minister with these ‘cut off’ ones and lead them to the life, the holiness, the revelation, the grace and the glory that is in Jesus Christ alone.  He has no need to be the Spirit of Knowledge, Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Power and the Fear of the Lord for the disciples of Christ, for through Jesus the disciples had already received that… for Jesus fulfilled the Law, the Prophets and the Psalms.  But now, for this new thing that God is doing, setting aside men and women from Jews and Gentiles to be part of the body of Christ to be the temple of God on Earth, the Holy Spirit had to reveal the Spirit of Truth, Holiness, Life, Grace, Revelation and Glory that He is.

Thus, those who place their faith in Christ and His words and cut themselves off from God according to the Levitical Law by eating the flesh and drinking the blood of Christ receive the double portion of the Holy Spirit.  As they have received Him as the Spirit of Knowledge, Power, Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel and the Fear of the Lord through Jesus Christ’s work of fulfilment of the Law, the Prophets and the Psalms, now they will also receive through their faith in Jesus Christ’s words the Holy Spirit as… the Spirit of Truth, Holiness, Life, Grace, Revelation and Glory.  No wonder Jesus has said the least in the Kingdom of God is greater than even John the Baptist, the greatest amongst men born of women.  Of course no one who is in the Kingdom of God is born of women, but born of the Father’s will and born again by the Spirit, for all sinners are born of women, but only sinners who repent and believe in Jesus Christ have the right to become children of God, born again of the Spirit.

So then, the basic doctrine about the Holy Spirit is that to all disciples of Christ… He is first the Spirit of Truth… the Spirit who causes us to cry, “Abba, Father,” for that is the truth, for we have our Father who is in Heaven, hallowed be His Name.  Hence, learning to recognise the truth is of paramount importance to a disciple… not wisdom, knowledge, understanding, counsel, power or fear of God.

You see… the judgment offered by James the Younger in Acts 15 seemed wise, knowledgeable and had understanding… even the fear of God, for he said, “…we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God.”  That is true in the light of the life of a Jew who has to live under the Levitical Law… knowing what they knew as Jews about how difficult it is to turn to God, James seemed to ‘understand’ the problem – the Gentiles would be discouraged if we require them to follow the Law, especially circumcision as those who went down to Antioch were preaching.  It seemed to be wisdom to replace the need for circumcision with abstinence from food and meats, blood and sexual immorality.  It seemed to convey a fear of the Lord and sounded like good counsel… even powerful.  The truth is his recommendations are absolute nonsense in the light of the finished work of Jesus Christ.

Christ has fulfilled the Law, the Prophets and the Psalms, and has caused all who are disciples to be cut off from the Law by the Law with His flesh and blood.  The truth is salvation by grace through faith, confirmed by the baptism of repentance, fire and the Holy Spirit is far easier already than righteousness before God by observance of the Law.  The truth is the partial observance of the Law at the four points recommended by James got everyone cursed and not blessed.  At least those who have eaten the flesh and drunk the blood of Jesus are blessed by their faith, and the curses of the Law have no further power over them for they are already cut off.  The truth is Jesus never taught us to abstain from any food, flesh or blood.

Thus, anyone who has received the Holy Spirit will be able to see first the truth, and if a person can truly see the truth, then the first thing he will see is that he is a sinner in need of God’s mercy.  Since he is a sinner, then his works of righteousness are like soiled rags before God, and therefore, no works of his can suffice to make him righteous before God.  If one sees the truth that one is a sinner… then that truth will cause him to repent, not believe.  For a person who sees the truth knows the truth and does not need to believe any further… but rather, being convicted by the truth, either act according to that truth or deny it.  Hence, the true conviction of the Holy Spirit always leads first to repentance and then faith… but never faith without repentance.   For He first convicts the world with regards to sin, and sin can only be wiped away by repentance and not faith.

And if indeed the Holy Spirit is continuously guiding a person to all truth, then the first ‘all truth’ you will see is what Paul saw about himself… When I want to do good, evil is right there with me.  For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members.  What a wretched man I am!  Who will rescue me from this body of death?  Thanks be to God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!  Why did Paul call his body, ‘this body of death’?  Because the fruit that brought death is the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.  Doing good does not save you from death… it is only when you do ‘life,’ that the life abundantly through Jesus will save you from death.

Thus, the knowledge of the facts and even the wisdom to search out any fact and the understanding of those facts mean nothing if the Spirit of Truth has not guided you into all truth.  Without the Holy Spirit the very facts themselves can deceive you.  That is why the gospel of Matthew’s rendering of the account of the events following the feeding of the 5000 and the resurrection are designed to mislead and even deceive the reader into thinking that Jesus sent them into the middle of the lake that night and that the eleven went to the mountain in Galilee as soon as they heard the messages.  That is why you can have people who know the Bible and the Bible commentaries, who know the Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic because they have studied it, who are well versed in the history of the church and which doctrines are acceptable or not acceptable, and yet they cannot see the truth.

Why?  Because truth does not reveal itself fully by words alone, but it is when those words are applied in life that the truth begins to reveal itself.  You may believe the words of Jesus are and Jesus Himself is T/truth… but the truth that is the words of Jesus and the Person of Jesus cannot be confirmed unless they are put into practice and they produce the results as promised.  You may believe these words of Jesus… “…they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well,” to be true, but the truth of those words will not be revealed unless you actually practise them… that is, lay hands on the sick and observe them over a period of time to see if they are healed.  Praying for the sick is not the practice of that verse… for Jesus never said, “They will pray for the sick,” and laying hands on the sick without following them up until they are healed is not the practice of that verse either, for the words… “…and they will get well,” do not speak of immediate healing, but of a time to come.  Just because you believe they will be healed does not give you the right to be a witness of that verse.  It is only after you have laid your hands and then observed over time that they are being healed, until they are healed (confirmed by signs of healing and nowadays by doctors) that you may testify that you are a witness to the truth of that verse.

Since Jesus Himself said, “Everyone on the side of truth listens to Me,” you can be certain that the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, is always the first Person who listens to Jesus, and since the Holy Spirit listens to Jesus, you can be certain He was not listening to James the Younger as he made his judgment in Acts 15.

As He is the Spirit of Truth to the disciples of Jesus… then you can be assured that the Holy Spirit will also let you see the truth hidden by the facts.  It is by the Holy Spirit that we ourselves have been led to see the errors of the eleven as we obeyed His counsel to us… to read and highlight Bibles repeatedly for months until we were ready to receive the truth.  And if a person is not ready to receive the truth, how can he receive the Spirit of Truth?  Thus, a person who does not listen to Jesus is not on the side of truth, and if you are not on the side of truth, then how can you have the Spirit of Truth?  You may have a spirit of knowledge, wisdom, even of power and counsel, and a fear of the Lord… but if you are not listening to Jesus, then the knowledge, the wisdom, the understanding, the counsel, the power… even the fear of the Lord are merely counterfeit and a lie, no matter how good it seems.  For even demons fear the Lord and Satan himself is a spirit of knowledge and wisdom with a degree of power… and they are more than happy to be a spirit of counsel as well and so counterfeit what would appear to be… the Holy Spirit.

You see, a man who does not lie is not a man of truth… he is merely a man who does not lie.  However, a man who works for the glory and honour of the one who sent him… Jesus said he is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.  Thus, a liar who works for the honour and glory of the one who sent him is a person of truth… but a person who does not lie, yet neither does he work for the glory and honour of the one who sent him, is not a man of truth… just a man who does not lie.  For there are many who do not lie who refuse to acknowledge the truth that they are sinners in need of Jesus.  The very fact that they do not lie is a stumbling block because their abstinence from sin has blinded them to the truth that they are descended from sinners and, as such, are born sinners.  The truth is all men are born sinners thanks to Adam and Eve, but all men can be born again righteous, thanks be to God through Christ Jesus.

No one can prove the words of Jesus to be true without miraculous power.  For without miraculous power, no man can heal the sick, drive out demons, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, multiply the food, walk on water and so on.  Thus, a man who can recite the words of Jesus and preach them, but cannot do what they say, is a man who knows the facts, but the Spirit of Truth has not seen it fit to give him His power to be a witness to the truth.  They are preachers, yes; they are Christians, yes; they have sound doctrine and a moral life, yes… and they will be saved.  However, are they witnesses?  No, for they cannot testify about the T/truth and to the truth.  They can preach it, but no judge will allow them to take the witness stand to testify.  That is why when Paul was met with the arrogance of the Corinthians, he wrote:  But I will come to you very soon, if the Lord is willing, and then I will find out not only how these arrogant people are talking, but what power they have.

It is only to those whom the Spirit of Truth knows are listening to Jesus to work for His glory and honour that the power to be His witnesses is given, power to do what Jesus has been doing and to do even greater things.  Yet… not everyone with power is a man of truth either… for there are those who do not listen to Jesus and yet have the counterfeit power of Satan.  This type of men are not a problem for those who have been faithfully listening to Jesus, practicing His words to master the power given them to finish the preparation of this world for His return.  They are only a problem to those who profess to have faith in Christ but are powerless themselves.

However, woe to the one who, having listened to Jesus and received the gift of the Holy Spirit’s power to do miracles, turns and uses that power to oppose the return of Jesus Himself… for him these words of Jesus hold true… “You do not know what kind of spirit you are of…” for the false prophet will call down fire from Heaven in the sight of men, just like Elijah did, to prove that he is a man of God, just like Elijah… forgetting that when the twelve tried to do that to the Samaritans who opposed Jesus in Luke 9.54… Jesus turned and rebuked them and said, “You do not know what kind of spirit you are of, for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.”

But you do know what kind of spirit you are of… the Spirit of Truth who guides you into all truth and keeps you listening to Jesus so that you can see the truth from the facts and remove all mystery.  It is this same Spirit of Truth, the Holy Spirit, who is saying to the churches, “Listen to Jesus,” and had we listened, we would have gone to Galilee as soon as we received the messages from the women, and the world would be witness to the church at full power displaying the glory of Christ for the last 2000 years.  It is the same Spirit who now enables those who do listen to Jesus and practise His words for His glory and honour… to see that the eleven never went immediately as commanded… and the church as it is is not what it should be.

So, is it any surprise that what the Spirit is saying to the churches today is, “Repent… and believe,” and not “Revival”?  No, there will be no revival until… there is a resurrection.  A resurrection of the original plans of God for the church of Jesus Christ if they had gone to Galilee as commanded.

If you can see the truth from the facts… you have the Spirit of Truth.  If the facts blind you from the truth… then you have the spirit of mystery… and mystery is not a title of the Holy Spirit.

So, do you know what kind of spirit you are of?  Amen.  Heed Paul’s advice… test the spirits, yes, but here is a better advice… test your spirit.
