Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from Heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow My instructions. On the sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice as much as they gather on the other days.”

“Tell the people: ‘Consecrate yourselves in preparation for tomorrow, when you will eat meat. The Lord heard you when you wailed, “If only we had meat to eat! We were better off in Egypt!” Now the Lord will give you meat, and you will eat it. You will not eat it for just one day, or two days, or five, ten or twenty days, but for a whole month—until it comes out of your nostrils and you loathe it—because you have rejected the Lord, who is among you, and have wailed before Him, saying, “Why did we ever leave Egypt?” ‘ “

In Exodus, the Lord provided manna for the Israelites to eat, and it completely sustained all their dietary needs. Yet in Numbers they were ungrateful, complained about the manna, clamoured for what they had in Egypt and demanded meat. In doing this they rejected the Lord. So He performed a great miracle and gave them quail… so much that they became very sick from it, vomited it out, and loathed it. Then perhaps they would realise the blessing of His provision and be satisfied or even grateful to Him for it.

This is the same today: The Lord has given us His words – the words from His mouth – “Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

However, people crave other food, so the Lord has given them what they crave – men’s words in the countless thousands of Christian books, DVD’s and TV programs about God, which are available around the world. These are provided by the Lord, just like the quail… for they replace the manna, the pure words of the Lord, as they are provided for a complaining people who are not satisfied with the pure diet provided in the Lord’s words. The intent is to make people so sick that they repent and come hungering for the pure word the Lord provides fresh daily to feed and nourish them completely.

The Lord has two types of fresh manna – the Lord’s spoken words written in the Bible, which the Holy Spirit uses to teach us, and the words we hear directly from the Lord as we listen to His voice day by day. These are our fresh manna.

“He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

“Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken from him.”
