James the Younger wrote to the twelve tribes of Israel in his letter to them: Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.[1] So we have men of all religions displaying their faith by what they do all over the world. If faith is displayed by action, then what displays knowledge, wisdom and understanding? If works are a proof of faith, then what is the proof of knowledge, wisdom and understanding, and how does one display them?

Just as works display faith, then knowledge is displayed by words and wisdom is displayed by thoughts. Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of knowledge.[2] Thus, you can display what you know or do not know by what you say, and since it is from the fullness of the heart that overflows unto the mouth,[3] so your words display what you know in your heart and what instructions you have applied your heart to. Since the heart of man is wicked so that no one can understand it except God, then the hearts of men have stored up the instructions of the wicked, and the words of men display their knowledge of evil. Indeed, Jesus said, “For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.”[4]

Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, for the heart of fools blurt out folly.[5] Since silence gives fools wisdom, then wisdom is displayed in the thoughts of men’s hearts and minds, a place which is hidden from the judgement of fellow men, but a place where only God can venture for God knows the thoughts of the hearts of men. In the same way, Jesus, God the Son, who never relinquished His ability to know the thoughts of the hearts of men, asked the Pharisees, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts?”[6] So, what Jesus said He will judge, according to what He hears, is not only by the spoken word, but His judgement will be based also on the thoughts of our hearts. No wonder King David pleaded, “Create in me a pure heart, O God,”[7] for he understood it was from the thoughts of his heart that gave rise to the adultery with Bathsheba and the murder of Uriah. For the words and the actions follow the thoughts.

It is also why when Phinehas followed the Israelite man and the Moabite woman into their tent and killed them – cold blooded murder you say – he was honoured by God with these words: “he was as zealous as I am for My honour among them.”[8] For it was in the heart of Phinehas to honour God, not murder or lust. Thus, although actions may display faith, and words may display knowledge, but wisdom is hidden, unless you know the thoughts of a man; and who can tell you those thoughts except the Holy Spirit who even knows the thoughts of God, even His deepest thoughts.

So, be not childish or immature, let no one impress you by their actions or their words, but stand in silence to hear the thoughts of men’s hearts as the Holy Spirit reveals them to you. Being not in awe of deeds and words is a sign of budding maturity, for the false prophet and the anti-Christ will try to deceive with wonderful actions and pleasing words, but their hearts contain thoughts of the highest degree of wickedness, which is the forsaking of God. For that is what they have in mind as they declare themselves to be god and his prophet and fight against the will of God as they try to prevent the return of Jesus. From now on, consider no one worthy if their thoughts are not set only on the arrival of Jesus Christ, for the first thoughts, which come out of a man’s heart, are evil thoughts. But men and women whose words and actions are always directed towards preparing themselves and this world for Jesus’ arrival, have a clean heart already, for their thoughts are not God forsaking, but God focussed, focussed on the same thought that is now and has been on the mind and heart of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit – the arrival of Jesus Christ for His millennial reign. Even as far back as Isaiah, God was already telling us of His plans for Jesus’ millennial reign. And He will be called Wonderful Counsellor, (or Wonderful, Counsellor,) Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over His Kingdom.[9]

The rejection of Jesus Christ as their King, by Israel before the government of Rome, is the proof of the wickedness of the hearts of religious men in their flowing robes, and as it was then, so it will be now. Anyone who finds the thought of Jesus Christ reigning for a millennium over the Earth repugnant has a wicked heart, a God forsaking heart. That is why the heirs of man, who will rebel at the end of the Millennium, will be destroyed by fire out of Heaven without warning, even as they surround the camp of God’s people.[10]

However, the presence of wisdom is merely the beginning of maturity, for fullness of maturity is reckoned by the presence of love, agape love, that is not of the kind of a child to a Father, but the love of a Father to a child and reciprocated not by a child or teenager to the Father, but by a fully grown Son who is Himself ready to be a Father and is a Father. Jesus, when He said to His disciples, “My children, I will be with you only a little longer,”[11] for the first time showed the fullness of the maturity of His love, and He returned that love to the Father as a Son, who Himself now being a Father, understood the Father’s love for Him. Not that Jesus did not have that pre-existent understanding, but for our sake, He addressed His disciples as, “My children,” to give us a sense of progression of growth in love. The growth of love begins as a journey of faith where you believe. Children, who believe their parents and obey what they say, show this early love. It grows to knowledge, for children in their later years of childhood and teenager years begin to know this love and display it because they know their parents. Those same teenagers, who begin to think about their parents and consider their parents, display the third step in the growth of love, that is, the love of the wise. But those who reach adulthood, and are themselves ready for parenthood, will begin to display the love of those who are beginning to understand. For you and I, this journey can take a lifetime, and many, sadly, never complete it.

For God, the journey began at the other end: His love for us begins with understanding us, with thoughts that always are mindful of us, words that show that He knows us, and actions that display He has faith in us.

Thus, understanding is displayed by love, the love of a Father for a child. So, when Paul wrote, for in Christ Jesus, I became your father through the gospel,[12] he was not using that term in defiance of Jesus’ command, “And do not call anyone on Earth, ‘father’ for you have one Father and He is in Heaven.”[13] But rather (and here we owe Paul an apology), he was saying to the Corinthians that his love for them was like that of a father to a son; that he loved them with understanding.

Thus, understanding is not displayed with deeds, words and even thoughts, but with love, and the greatest of all love is the love that understands. God is Love, and He alone understands all things, even before a single thing was made. As such, the power of the overcomer is not his deeds, words or thoughts, but rather his understanding displayed in love. Indeed, love that understands will prevail over love that believes, love that knows, and love that is mindful with thoughts, for the love that understands can never be disappointed or dismayed or destroyed by faith or lack of faith, by knowledge or lack of knowledge, or by thoughts, whether evil or good.

The fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil offered only knowledge of good and evil, for God said concerning Adam and Eve, “The man has now become like one of Us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the Tree of Life and eat, and live forever.”[14] Adam and Eve came to know good and evil after they had eaten the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, but they did not understand it. Had they eaten of the Tree of Life first, they would have understood Life; that is, they would have known and understood God who is the Life, and then they would be able to see Good and Evil in its true perspective and see why God hates evil with His soul.[15]

Now can you see Jesus crucified before the foundation of the Earth, whose love of God started with love that understood God, not love that believed in God, knew God, or thought of God. This is why even when the Father forsook Him on the cross, His love for God was not deterred, and He continued His work and finished it, and still committed His spirit to Him who forsook Him even after He had done exactly what was commanded of Him. We are to be witnesses who not only know, believe and understand God, but we are to testify that Jesus’ love for God was not based on faith, knowledge or wisdom, but on understanding. That Jesus didn’t just believe in God, know God or thought mindfully of God to save His soul, but He understood God enough to even wrestle His soul for God, so that being made alive by the Spirit in the spirit, He went to Hell to preach,[16] the place where souls are held in torment awaiting the day of their destruction in the Lake of Fire.

So, the church at full power is the church that listens to the Holy Spirit and does exactly what He says. It is the church that loves God as Jesus loves the Father, and is a church that loves with understanding. Such a church is the church of the overcomer, worthy of He who overcame, and is filled with overcomers. They are overcomers not because they displayed their faith by their deeds or their knowledge by their words (James the Younger knew his scriptures, but his words showed he never understood Jesus when he declared his so-called judgement in Acts 15). Indeed, the church of the overcomers does not display their love by their thoughts, but far superior to thoughts, for the Lord has given His overcomers understanding before a single thought is conceived, a single word is formed and a deed acted out.

That is the calibre, the true calibre of an overcomer. He is the One who understands, and by His understanding, overcame before He displayed His faith, sprouted His knowledge and made known His thoughts. The world sees an overcomer as one who is declared as one by the result of the test, but God sees an overcomer as one who understands the result before the test begins.

So, if you can understand the consequence of the result of Jesus not coming back to Earth and the result of Jesus being back on Earth, before He arrives, you are already an overcomer and have overcome the world and its faith, even your own.

Thus, the Overcomer was pre-existent before the test began. He understood the result without the test; the test only made known the result that had to be achieved. God alone is truly the Overcomer – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. They are the Overcomers and therefore, to be overcomers we must be like Them, to come to the place where we understand the result of the test before the result is declared.

As such, there are characteristics and behaviours of the Overcomer that we must understand and have before the test comes. By understanding what an overcomer is and what he does to achieve success makes us an overcomer before the test begins, and no results are needed to declare that we are indeed overcomers, merely the proof of what we have always been. If we love what and who we understand and understand what and who we love, we cannot fail, can never fail and therefore are already overcomers, just as Jesus had overcome the world, the devil and even our faith before a single creation was made.

So lend your ears to the art of the Overcomer who achieves His success by overshadowing, overflowing, overtaking, overpowering, over throwing, overturning and overwhelming all that lays before Him.

The Art of the Overcomer

The first thing we have to learn in order to manifest the Overcomer who is in us, is the ability to overshadow all that is before us. When the angel Gabriel told Mary, the virgin, of the impossible miracle that would happen through her and to her, he used these words: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.”[17] Overshadow meaning cover, meaning to cover to such an extent as to engulf. It gives the picture of a cloud overshadowing the land, or a tent, or a person, but even such a picture is inadequate and does not give the true meaning of ‘overshadow’ from God’s perspective. For we know that though a cloud may overshadow a house, the cloud compared to the land and sky is still small.

When God uses the word overshadow, it is used in the context and the picture that there are only two objects, the One who overshadows and the one who is overshadowed. There is no third object of reference when it comes to size, like the land on which the house stands, which is overshadowed by a cloud that is bigger than the house but itself is smaller than the land. Because we are confined to the Earth, we do not see the true meaning of God’s context of ‘overshadow’. From God’s perspective, there is no third point of reference, just you and Him, and in that context, see the Universe as a pea in the ocean, and the whole ocean is God.

Thus, when you can understand what the word overshadow means from God’s context, it means overwhelmingly more than enough, therefore failure is not even a thought, or a whisper, or a concept, but success, full-blooded success is guaranteed.

Now, from this perspective, look with fresh eyes at Genesis 1:1-2: In the beginning God created the Heavens and the Earth. Now the Earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. Hovering over the waters like a cloud hovering over the sea is the image we are used to, a small cloud over a vast ocean. Because that is the image we see from these words, we are conformed to the likeness of Adam and his image. We see a small God hovering over a large expanse of water, like a cloud hovering over an ocean, and because we see that, even the word overshadow means lack and insufficiency. So Adam saw that he lacked the Knowledge of Good and Evil, just like Eve did. And all sons of Seth, who are all those descended through Noah, have always seen God in their image, a Universe that contained God and not God who contained the Universe.

Now, see God the Spirit hovering over the waters like the entire Universe hovers over the Earth and you will begin to see the all sufficiency of God’s power that overshadowed Mary, which was why the virgin birth of Jesus Christ was never an impossibility but a surety. (Pun)

God is God the Overshadower, for in Him all things have their being and existence, and not outside of Him. The beginning of the understanding of God is when you can see Him for the Overshadower He is. You see the Painter now, good, now learn the science.
