Codus Electi XXXI – The Sign

Download the pdf file

As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John and Andrew asked Him privately, “Tell us, when will these things happen?  And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?”

Like the pharisees and the teachers of the law, the disciples asked Jesus about signs, and one of them was, “…the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?” This sign of Mark 13.4 is the first of the signs that all things are about to be fulfilled, that is, it is the early warning sign that the birth pangs have reached a critical level.  Now a sign is a clear indication and not something that you are not sure of.  Even though the gospel must be completed in its preaching before the end can come, no one really can know with certainty that it is completed.  As such, what Jesus said in Matthew 24.14, “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come,” is not a sign, but rather, it is the process which, when completed, permits the initiation of the sequence of events that bring about the end.  However, there is a sign – the sign – as the disciples asked, “…the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?” which includes the completion of the preaching of the gospel.  A sign which leaves those who know what to look for with no uncertainty.

That is what a sign is.  It is an event or occurrence that dispels all uncertainty from those who are looking for it, but to those who are not searching for it, it will never be noticed unless it is universal and all encompassing, like the sign of the Son of Man appearing in the sky.  Even then the appearance of the Rock out of the Heavens not carved by human hands will mean different things for different people.  To those who know, it is the sign of His coming.  To those who do not know, it is an asteroid coming to destroy the Earth with a terminal event!

The false prophet himself is the sign of the end of the age, for with his appearance, the return of Christ to fight him at Armageddon is imminent.  He is the sign that will initiate the sequence of events that will lead to the appearance of the Rock from out of the Heavens appearing in the telescopes of the world.  While the world trembles in fear of what is coming upon it, he will have gathered his elect, his kings and their armies to surround Jerusalem, waiting to attack and destroy the hill that is so crucial for the completion of Christ’s return – the Mount of Olives.  And while he is gathered there, he too will wait for a sign.  The sign that tells him which mount of dirt is the true Mount of Olives… for he knows better than to trust what tradition says is the Mount of Olives, but like you have learnt, so too is the false prophet well trained enough to wait for the Lord to show him which is the true Mount of Olives before he expends his power to destroy it.

As for the sign they asked for in Luke 21.7, “And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?” it is the sign that not a single stone of the temple would be left standing.  The Lord’s reply to that question was, “When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near.” That was fulfilled in 70AD with the sacking of Jerusalem by Rome and the temple destroyed.  However, Luke 21.20 also speaks of the time of the second and complete final desolation of Jerusalem.  30 years or so after Jerusalem was destroyed by Rome, John was shown The great city split into three parts, and the cities of the nations collapsed by the earthquake, which he described as, No earthquake like it has ever occurred since man has been on Earth, so tremendous was the quake. As such, the surrounding of Jerusalem by armies will occur again and its desolation will happen again, except this time it will not be rebuilt as it was after Nebuchadnezzar or after Caesar, but it will be rebuilt by Jesus Himself.

So you see, they asked for four signs:  one for when the temple would be destroyed, one for when Christ would be coming, one for when the end of the age would happen, and one that would warn everyone that the other three signs are about to happen.  This is a precursory sign, that is, a sign that warns of the coming of the other signs.  And you, elect, are that sign.  The elect of the Lord, the Holy Spirit, who as Jesus said, “If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive.  But for the sake of the elect, whom He has chosen, He has shortened them.” And if you are the sign, then you must know, not believe, with certainty that you are, and there must be proof that you may know who you are and who sent you.  You see, elect, Jesus knew who He was and who sent Him as He said, “…for I know where I came from and where I am going.” Likewise, you too know where you come from and where you are going.  By that I do not mean you are a sinner saved by grace to go to Heaven.  Rather, you know the process by which you have come through – the process of your election.  For before you can be an elect of the Lord, the Holy Spirit, you must have already been a believer, and more than a believer, a disciple, that is, you have been discipled by another disciple.  It is after you have been a disciple that election was conferred… but even then the process of that election is what sets you apart.  For to you and through you the forgotten command was restored, just like the Book of the Law was found by Josiah.  However, after the command was restored, what then began to set you apart is your training.  A training which is not part of the normal training of believers and disciples, not even that of the eleven.  A training that is also a selection process, which those of you who have endured it, persevered with it, and above all else, come to love it, know well.  It is not prayer and fasting; it is not education; it is not fellowship or ministry; it is not listening to teaching; it is not even practising the words of Jesus, for many believers and disciples have done just that.  As such, these things are not the proof of your election at all, for then all who have done such things can lay claim to this.

However, what is unique that not even the eleven did, but that which Paul would have done as part of his training to be a pharisee, is your writing.  No, elect, not just your highlighting of the word of the Lord copy after copy, but those who then went on to writing, first the words you had highlighted and then the book of the Revelation and then the gospels as instructed, again and again.  Not typed, not highlighted, but handwritten by your own hand.  A lost art – in Scripture the art of the scribes who wrote to make copies of the scriptures.  This unique part of your training is what has set you apart.  No group of believers or disciples in this age has been put through this training as you have so that not only do you know the scriptures (which is not unique to an elect), but you have written them enough and have loved writing them enough until you have become experts who are familiar with every line and every stroke of every pen, so that from amongst you have come those who can reassemble the Gospel of Jesus Christ as witnessed by the Holy Spirit.

Should it surprise you, elect, that the Holy Spirit has His own gospel about the Lord Jesus Christ?  It should not, for after all, who is the chief and greatest Witness, the truest Witness of Jesus Christ but the Holy Spirit Himself?  If then indeed you are to be the elect of the Holy Spirit, then you must know His gospel, that is, the Holy Spirit’s Gospel of Jesus Christ.  The gospel the Holy Spirit wrote so that people might believe.

The church knows of the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, and holds to the words of Paul that All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. However, the apostle appears to have forgotten that amongst the scriptures, which were part of his training as a pharisee in his former life, there was a set which was not only God-breathed, but God written… except it was broken by disobedience.

The first set of tablets that Moses brought down from the mountain as it is written:  Moses turned and went down the mountain with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands.  They were inscribed on both sides, front and back.  The tablets were the work of God; the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets. Unfortunately, this set was broken by Moses when he saw the golden calf:  When Moses approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, his anger burned and he threw the tablets out of his hands, breaking them to pieces at the foot of the mountain. And the second set that replaced it was written not by God but by Moses: Moses was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water.  And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant—the Ten Commandments.

If there was a set of law written by God for Israel, then there is a gospel written by the Holy Spirit, but a set which, like the two tablets, has been broken because of disobedience.  Have you ever wondered, elect, what happened to the pieces of that first set?  Did Joshua pick them up?

Your training as scribes, those who are familiar in handling the word of the Lord truthfully with a pen, has qualified you to bring forth that which was lost because of disobedience – the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to the Holy Spirit, the gospel not written by men inspired by the Holy Spirit, but the gospel written by the Holy Spirit.

The reassembling of the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John into a single book reveals that the true Author is the Holy Spirit.  And that it is not four books reassembled into one, but it is a single book dissected into four but with a genius that no man can match.  For the Holy Spirit dissected His one book into four in such a way all four read as if they are a complete book in their own right, with elements that conflict with the other three until they are reassembled into the one, where all conflicts disappear and the Authorship is unmistakably that of God the Holy Spirit, the only true Witness of Jesus Christ on Earth.

Israel never reassembled the broken pieces of the two tablets that were God written.  It is our privilege that we can reassemble the Gospel of Jesus Christ that is God written.

If the Holy Spirit’s gospel is reassembled, then He is ready to testify, and once He has testified, He can be taken out of the way and the rebellion can be unleashed as it was unleashed in Heaven once Jesus brought forth His testimony about Satan.  So likewise, the testimony of the Holy Spirit, the written testimony of the Holy Spirit, now reconstructed and restored to its original form, will testify against all the satans of the church, that is, men and women who follow Jesus but do not have in mind the things of God but of men.  They will rise up in rebellion against this testimony, just as Satan and his angels rose up in rebellion.  And once more the angels of God will be unleashed and this time they will remove everything that causes sin in the kingdom, that is, everyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit and everyone who disbelieves the written testimony of the Holy Spirit, the Gospel of Jesus Christ as written by the Holy Spirit, which was never collected by the eleven from the top of the mountain, for no one went that morning when He and the Father waited.

And when it is revealed, then your duties, your training, as scribes will come into its own, for it is the work of your pens that will herald the harvest wherein the tares are sorted from the wheat, as it is written:  Now the glory of the God of Israel went up from above the cherubim, where it had been, and moved to the threshold of the temple.  Then the Lord called to the man clothed in linen who had the writing kit at his side and said to him, “Go throughout the city of Jerusalem and put a mark on the foreheads of those who grieve and lament over all the detestable things that are done in it.” As I listened, He said to the others, “Follow him through the city and kill, without showing pity or compassion.  Slaughter old men, young men and maidens, women and children, but do not touch anyone who has the mark.  Begin at My sanctuary.”
