Jesus said, “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by His own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the Earth.”[1]

Where are the ‘ends of the Earth’? It would be easy to immediately assume that the whole world is the ‘ends of the Earth’, but ‘the ends of the Earth’ are different to the world. For John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world…” meaning the whole planet. But only in two other places does He use the phrase ‘ends of the Earth’, which is in Mark 13:27, “And He will send His angels and gather His elect from the four winds, from the ends of the Earth to the ends of the Heavens.”

The other place Jesus uses the phrase ‘ends of the Earth’ is in Matthew 12:42, “The Queen of the South will rise at the judgement with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the Earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now One greater than Solomon is here.” And again, slightly differently in Luke 11:31, “The Queen of the South will rise at the judgement with the men of this generation and condemn them; for she came from the ends of the Earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now One greater than Solomon is here.”

Jesus only mentioned one ‘ends of the Earth’, which is where the Queen of the South came from. This Queen of the South is the Queen of Sheba who made a journey to visit King Solomon. When the Queen of Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon and his relation to the Name of the LORD, she came to test him with hard questions.[2] What was it that impressed God about the Queen of the South that Jesus said that she will be allowed to judge the men of that generation? Is it not that she came from the ends of the Earth, as Jesus said, to find Wisdom? And who is Wisdom except the Holy Spirit who is the Spirit of Wisdom?[3] So who did the Queen of Sheba really come to hear and test? Was it not the Holy Spirit, whose wisdom had been imparted into Solomon? Solomon was symbolic of Jesus who was to come later. However Solomon failed miserably when he misused what he was given for his own glory. What impressed God is that the Queen of Sheba had come from the ‘ends of the Earth’ to hear from the Holy Spirit. Like Mary Magdalene who set the example of listening to Jesus, the Queen of Sheba can be considered as the person who set the example of what lengths to go to, to listen to the Holy Spirit!

When the queen of Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon and his relation to the Name of the LORD, she came to test him with hard questions. Arriving at Jerusalem with a very great caravan—with camels carrying spices, large quantities of gold, and precious stones—she came to Solomon and talked with him about all that she had on her mind. Solomon answered all her questions; nothing was too hard for the king to explain to her. When the queen of Sheba saw all the wisdom of Solomon and the palace he had built, the food on his table, the seating of his officials, the attending servants in their robes, his cupbearers, and the burnt offerings he made at the temple of the LORD, she was overwhelmed. She said to the king, “The report I heard in my own country about your achievements and your wisdom is true. But I did not believe these things until I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, not even half was told me; in wisdom and wealth you have far exceeded the report I heard. How happy your men must be! How happy your officials, who continually stand before you and hear your wisdom! Praise be to the LORD your God, who has delighted in you and placed you on the throne of Israel. Because of the LORD’s eternal love for Israel, He has made you king, to maintain justice and righteousness.”[4]

There is no indication of where the Queen of Sheba came from, except that she had heard about King Solomon’s fame. The Queen of Sheba most likely heard the reports from Solomon’s men who had been sent by ship to get gold from Ophir. King Solomon also built ships at Ezion Geber, which is near Elath in Edom, on the shore of the Red Sea. And Hiram sent his men—sailors who knew the sea—to serve in the fleet with Solomon’s men. They sailed to Ophir and brought back 420 talents of gold, which they delivered to King Solomon.[5]

It is immediately after this that the Queen of Sheba travels to Jerusalem to meet with King Solomon. It is also interesting to note that in Genesis 10:26, the two names ‘Sheba’ and ‘Ophir’ appear as sons of Joktan, who was the son of Shem, whose father was Noah. It is possible that these two brothers had their own tribes, which had lasted to those times, and were possibly closely located near each other. If we research the Internet, we find that there are varying views on where the Queen of Sheba came from. The two main areas are in the countries of southern Saudi Arabia and Yemen. The other position mentioned is in Ethiopia. Jesus did not say the ‘queen of Sheba’, but said the ‘queen of the South’. As Jesus is the Truth, we forget what men say and we take Jesus’ word and apply it, and from a map, ‘South’ indicates modern day southern Sudan and western Ethiopia and north eastern Congo. From the reports in the Bible of the size and strength of the armies in the King James Version, the Ethiopian army came a few times in the period of the kings to attack Jerusalem and other countries, therefore they were a nation of relatively large size and reasonably modern and powerful for that time. Also, as gold would seem to be linked with the queen of Sheba, the areas around southern Sudan and all eastern Congo have very large alluvial gold deposits, making it easy to extract gold from the ground. The Congo also has many precious stones, and plenty of trees.

We know from history that Ethiopia has a strong connection with Israel, as even today they claim to have the true ‘Ark of the Covenant’, and even many Ethiopians have moved back to Israel because of their descendants from Israel. Yet God has said of the Ark, “It will never enter their minds or be remembered; it will not be missed nor will another one be made.”[6] Therefore we can know that they don’t have the true Ark. It appears that the people of the South, through the Queen of Sheba, had taken hold of the Old Testament law and its commands in the hope of gaining Wisdom! Well, maybe that is what the Holy Spirit was trying to impart to them through the event in Acts 8:26 of Philip with the Ethiopian. And if they had listened, they would have received a lot more than just Wisdom!

The last we hear of Ethiopia is in Act 8:26 when Philip was sent to meet an Ethiopian who had just been in Jerusalem worshiping God. It would appear that even at that time, God was still known to Ethiopia through the old covenant, but we don’t know by how much, except the Ethiopian did have his own copy of the scriptures that he took with him. Having your own copy of the scriptures at that time gives an indication of the wealth and position of the Ethiopian. Philip shared the good news about Jesus, baptised the Ethiopian, and then was removed out of the way, by being translated. It was the Holy Spirit who told Philip to go over to the chariot, which is one of the few times the Holy Spirit was quoted as speaking. Was the Holy Spirit trying to reach out to that part of the world again with the good news of Jesus Christ, and introduce them to the new covenant through Jesus Christ? Jesus said, “But the Counsellor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My Name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”[7] The children of Wisdom include the people of the South, from where the Queen of Sheba came from.

Hear, O Heavens! Listen, O Earth! For the LORD has spoken: “I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against Me. The ox knows his master, the donkey his owner’s manger, but Israel does not know, My people do not understand.”[8] “I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the Kingdom of God is greater than he.”[9] “To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other: ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not cry.’ For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and ‘sinners.’ But Wisdom is proved right by all Her children.[10]

It is the children of Wisdom who prove Wisdom to be right. Unfortunately, Wisdom has too many children who prove that being disobedient will get you into trouble, thus proving Wisdom right. It is in fact, all those children of God who have received Wisdom or the Spirit of God. As children of God, we have numerous testimonies of people who have not listened to Wisdom, not listened to the Holy Spirit, and therefore have not listen to Jesus, who was sent because Israel would not listen to God our Father. History is full of those who will not listen. Are we still children who are expecting God to join in with us in the marketplace where items and goods are brought and sold by trade? Are we, the children of God, still acting like beggars in the marketplace of the world, showing our Father as poor, bringing disgrace on Him because we refuse to listen to our Father? Are we still trying to buy and sell what belongs to our Father in the marketplace of the world, asking our Father to help us buy and sell what He has given freely to us? And trying to entice our Father with songs and tunes, or have Him feel sorry for us when we go to Him singing to have Him sell to strangers what belongs to Him?

Here am I, and the children the LORD has given me. We are signs and symbols in Israel from the LORD Almighty, who dwells on Mount Zion.[11] Yes, we are signs and symbols of those who do not know our Father in Heaven. Does this bring glory and honour to God or Jesus? Does this show that we know the Holy Spirit?

Today, the land of Samaria, Judea, Jerusalem, Sudan, Ethiopia, and the Congo are war torn and in constant terror. We can remember that at least for the past 20 years, the Sudan has been at war and Ethiopia has been in famine due to dry ground with no water. And the north eastern part of the Congo with other countries in that region have almost been non-accessible for a long time due to the violence, mini dictators, warlords, etc in those violent areas, with no one being able to bring peace to that region of the world. And no one is interested in helping these people because the world considers them impossible to help, even with the riches in their countries. Why? We don’t have to look deeply into Israel and the surrounding areas to know that they have been disobedient to God. Have they rejected God’s word, and found themselves subject to the punishments where God said, “But if you will not listen to Me and carry out all these commands, and if you reject My decrees and abhor My laws and fail to carry out all My commands and so violate My covenant, then I will do this to you: I will bring upon you sudden terror, wasting diseases and fever that will destroy your sight and drain away your life. You will plant seed in vain, because your enemies will eat it. I will set My face against you so that you will be defeated by your enemies; those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee even when no one is pursuing you.”[12]?

The LORD goes even further with His punishments after this. So, it is God who is allowing this part of the world to be in its current state. We should all take warning of what God can allow to happen to us, and be aware of how far God can go in His punishments. The rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother.[13] Therefore as God is a good Father, He will impart discipline to His children until they ‘Listen to Him.’ It is the reason why the areas around Israel and the areas to the south of Israel are in constant discipline by God. Don’t you think that a father who needs to constantly discipline his children would end up hating them? Imagine if the children would repent and mature by listening to Him, how much joy that would bring the Father? What would happen to the world? Would it then fear God? Would they come and make peace first or would they try to put down the threat of having a people more powerful than them? History shows that the world attacks any new threats and would not tolerate a people obedient to God, which is why Jesus spoke about persecution.

Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to Him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession.” Jesus did not answer a word. So His disciples came to Him and urged Him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.” He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.” The woman came and knelt before Him. “Lord, help me!” she said. He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to their dogs.” “Yes, Lord,” she said, “but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” Then Jesus answered, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour.[14]

Jesus shows here that the children are to receive the bread first. It was the Holy Spirit who gave the bread of life to the Ethiopian, showing that God has children in that region. Jesus also shows that His mercy does even extend to the dogs, but the focus is on the children. The bread was given with the words spoken by Jesus, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And life was given in the form of the power to release the woman’s daughter from the demon.

Listen, O Heavens, and I will speak; hear, O Earth, the words of my mouth. Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants. I will proclaim the name of the LORD. Oh, praise the greatness of our God! He is the Rock, His works are perfect, and all His ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is He. They have acted corruptly toward Him; to their shame they are no longer His children, but a warped and crooked generation. Is this the way you repay the LORD, O foolish and unwise people? Is He not your Father, your Creator, who made you and formed you?[15]

Is this what our Father wants to hear? That He is a Father of foolish people? Should we take away the stench that comes from foolish children who will not ‘Listen to Him’? Does our Father need foolish children?

Going back to what Jesus said, “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by His own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the Earth.”[16]

For Jesus’ words to be fulfilled, we need witnesses, “witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the Earth.” Witnesses to the children of God, by sons and daughters of God, so that they also may become sons and daughters of God, bringing joy to our Father and proving right Wisdom that She has brought up children who have testimony of what happens when they ‘Listen to Him.’
