Blindness

“For a long time I have kept silent, I have been quiet and held Myself back.  But now, like a woman in childbirth, I cry out, I gasp and pant.  I will lay waste the mountains and hills and dry up all their vegetation; I will turn rivers into islands and dry up the pools.  I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth.  These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them.  But those who trust in idols, who say to images, ‘You are our gods,’ will be turned back in utter shame.  Hear, you deaf; look, you blind, and see!  Who is blind but My servant, and deaf like the messenger I send?  Who is blind like the one committed to Me, blind like the servant of the LORD?  You have seen many things, but have paid no attention; your ears are open, but you hear nothing.”[1]

“Who gave man his mouth?  Who makes him deaf or mute?  Who gives him sight or makes him blind?  Is it not I, the LORD?”[2]

As He went along, He saw a man blind from birth.  His disciples asked Him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”  “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.  As long as it is day, we must do the work of Him who sent Me.  Night is coming, when no one can work.  While I am in the world, I am the Light of the World.”[3]

Are you blind?  How blind are you?  What light are you looking for?  What light are you looking at?  What light has caught your attention and has blinded you to the true Light.  What sounds are you listening to?

In this world are many lights, ‘lights of darkness’ or ‘lights of the light’, but none of them are the Light, the light of the world.  Jesus said “I am the Light of the World.  Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”[4]  The light is a spiritual light that we are looking for, to put our hopes into, to bring about results that we desire to achieve in our lives.

The problem for people in this world is they do not know what light they are looking at.  The lights in this world come from many sources such as wealth, religions, military power and financial sources.  You can see these lights everywhere around us.  Lights are promoted all day every day, as the lights which answer our problems as we walk about in this world.  These lights are from the detestable idols and vile images people have made with their own hands and we are to have nothing to do with the ‘lights of darkness’ of this world.  For many people pursue the light that captures their attention, and like a moth attracted to a light at night in the darkness, they chase the light, and it can fade away after a period of time, disappearing suddenly to leave them in darkness, even kill them, or hold them captive until their dying day.

The ‘lights of the light’ are also idols and images.  They reflect the light of Jesus, but are not the Light of the World, for only Jesus is the Light of the World, which the Father gave us and sent into the world.  The ‘lights of the light’ come from the reflection that idols give from the words and promises of Jesus when we take our focus off the true Light of the World.  Jesus can make you a promise of great and wonderful things that He has for you, and you can easily be caught with the reflected light of the promise.  Your attention and focus is now on the promise and not on Jesus.  It is when you step into the path of the light coming from Jesus that the promise will disappear, and you will be upset that the promise from Jesus has disappeared into darkness.  As long as you stand in the path of the light that comes from Jesus, the promise will be in darkness, until you repent, step out of the way, and focus yourself back onto Jesus.

Other examples of the ‘light of lights’ are idols and images which can be icons and saints in churches, church programs, praise and worship songs, church buildings, the people themselves in churches, etc.  What light are they reflecting?

Blindness is the inability to receive light with your eyes.  So, how blind are you to the Light of the World?  How blind are you to the dark light of this world and the light light of the promises of God?  It is people who are looking for the true Light of the World whom the Father enables to come to Jesus.  Yet when many come to Jesus, they get distracted by the reflected light of Jesus.  This is why many Christians do not see answers to prayers because they are not really looking at Jesus, but the promises of Jesus.  Not the true light just reflected light.  It is that they find the reflected light more comfortable, and the pure light of Jesus causes discomfort.  Yet, if you take time to adjust to the light that comes from Jesus, you will find it becomes more comfortable.

Before the apostle Paul encountered Jesus, Paul was only able to see the light of the law.  When Paul encountered Jesus Christ for the first time, the light from Jesus blinded him.  It is recorded in Acts 9:7 that the men travelling with Paul… heard the sound but did not see anyone because the men also could not see the light from Jesus.  At that point, Paul was blind to all light, including physical light.  It is when Ananias prayed for him that Paul received back his physical sight, but now he was a different man as he was blind to the light of the law, whereas before he was blind to Jesus who is the Truth!  From that point onwards, Paul was only able to see the Light of the World who is Jesus.  In the same way, it is Jesus who makes you blind to the light that comes from the false lights of idols and images in the world so that you cannot go back to the world for answers.  This is why many fail in the world after they have met Jesus and cannot go back to Egypt to do business in the ways of the world for they are now blind to the world’s ways, and only Jesus’ way is possible for them.  You will be able to see what happens around you, but you will not receive light or understanding from what happens in the world.

We need to be blind to all other lights except the light of Jesus.  Not even the reflected light of Jesus is good enough.  For when the reflected light of Jesus will be shone in the churches of today, many will flock to the reflected light of the miracles, signs and wonders, and when men step in the way of Jesus shining His light in this dark world, the reflected light of Jesus will disappear as men try to take hold of it for themselves, and there will only be darkness again.  They will find themselves in even greater darkness, for after you have been looking at a light for a small period of time and it disappears, your eyes become dazzled, and you are in greater darkness for a short period of time until your eyes readjust.

Hear what the Lord said in the four translations of Isaiah 42:18-19:

§           NIV:  “Hear, you deaf; look, you blind, and see!  Who is blind but My servant, and deaf like the messenger I send?  Who is blind like the one committed to Me, blind like the servant of the LORD?”

§           NASB:  “Hear, you deaf!  And look, you blind, that you may see.  Who is blind but My servant, or so deaf as My messenger whom I send?  Who is so blind as he who is at peace with Me, or so blind as the servant of the LORD?”

§           AMP:  “Hear, you deaf!  And look, you blind, that you may see! … Who is blind like the one who is at peace with Me…?  Yes, who is blind like the LORD’s servant?”

§           KJV:  “Hear, ye deaf; and look, ye blind, that ye may see.  Who is blind, but My servant?  Or deaf, as My messenger that I sent?  Who is blind as he that is perfect, and blind as the LORD’s servant?”

You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in You.[5]

After looking at these verses, we can say “Perfect peace is found in the light from Jesus,” and with the command from the Father to “Listen to Him,” you will stay in the light.  This requires you to keep your mind focused only on Jesus as your hope of salvation in all things in this world.  This is the peace which transcends all understanding that Paul spoke about in Philippians 4:7.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

It is the ‘Peace of God’ that guards your hearts and minds from the false lights in the world.  You yourself know that the false lights will mislead you and they can take you on an unrighteous path, which does not lead into greater peace with God.

How blind was Jesus to all lights in the world?  How blind was Jesus to the Jews around Him?  How steadfast was Jesus’ mind in all that He did?  Likewise, how perfectly blind to all lights except Jesus’ are we to be?  Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”[6]  Now ‘be blind to all lights of this world and even the reflected light of Jesus, and stay focused on Jesus only.  He is the only Light of the World.

Jesus said, “For judgement I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.”  Some Pharisees who were with Him heard Him say this and asked, “What?  Are we blind too?”  Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.”[7]

Do you want to help judge the world?  Then do what Jesus does!  Let the blind see and let the seeing become blind!  It is the choice of an individual to which light he will seek, and we can’t make that decision for him.  We are to extinguish all false lights until only one light is left, and that one light is Jesus Christ, the Light of the World.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.  For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.  Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.  This is the verdict:  Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.  Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.  But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.”[8]

Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.[9]

As the false lights in the world are extinguished, many people will find themselves in darkness and will start looking for another source of light to lighten their own ways, or they will choose to move into darkness and evil.  A decision will be forced on people to show their true hearts, and these decisions will either take them into greater darkness or on a search for the true Light of the World.  Towards the end of this age, the Anti Christ and False Prophet will be a light for those who love darkness.

Woe to you who long for the day of the LORD!  Why do you long for the day of the LORD?  That day will be darkness, not light.  It will be as though a man fled from a lion only to meet a bear, as though he entered his house and rested his hand on the wall only to have a snake bite him.  Will not the day of the LORD be darkness, not light – pitch-dark, without a ray of brightness?[10]

We who are already focused on the Light of the World, will continue on in perfect peace as we keep our minds steadfastly on the light that comes from Jesus.  But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light…”[11]  To stay in the light, we are to live by the truth, which is the language of Jesus, and our deeds are to reflect the light of Jesus – to point the way to Him, and not ourselves.

Peace be with you.
